OUr Board of Directors

Our Board of Directors is dedicated to taking Somos Cultura y Más to the next level!

Rebeca Barrera Executive Director

Rebeca María Barrera, MA

As Executive Director of Somos Cultura y Más, Barrera encourages friends and colleagues to get involved in culturally rich activities and events. Her entrepreneurial skills help her plan projects that require many partners who add their special talents to each project. After several years of these "volunteer" projects -- building Día de Muertos ofrendas, cultural fashion shows, book festivals, classes and workshops it was obvious that a new organization was being born, thus the beginning of Somos Cultura y Más.

OUr Founders

Rebeca María Barrera and Merri Longoria Gutiérrez, met while working on El Taller, The Early Childhood Workshop, a bilingual curriculum for pre-K published by Scholastic. As they became friends, they discovered that they were both descendants of the earliest families in Texas who settled along the Río Grande River. Their love of México drew them to places where handcrafts abound. They were inspired by the deep traditions, celebrations, and history that were missing from many educational programs in the U.S. They understood that children who know their heritage and family history grow up with a strong identity, resilient, and are more confident and successful in school and later in life. Eventually this led to founding Somos Cultura y Más with six friends who had similar experiences and felt there was a cultural gap in schools that could only be resolved with community strategies. These two high achievers blend ethnographic research, firsthand experiences andcommunity engagement to generate programs that inspire families to embrace their traditions and keep them alive for future generations.
