Aguas Frescas

Popular Flavors

Some of the most popular agua fresca flavors include:

  • Horchata – A sweet, creamy rice-based drink

  • Hibiscus (Jamaica) – A tart, floral drink made from dried hibiscus flowers

  • Watermelon – A juicy, hydrating summer favorite

Aguas frescas are commonly sold by street vendors, but you can also find them in restaurants, juice bars, and even some convenience stores.

How to make Agua Fresca

Instructions:

  1. In a blender, combine water, sugar, and fruit.

  2. Puree until smooth.

  3. Pour the mixture into a pitcher or serving container (use a sieve if you prefer a smoother texture).

  4. Taste, then stir in lime juice to your preference.

  5. Taste again, and add additional sugar if needed.

  6. Garnish with a lemon or lime wedge.

Tips for the Best Agua Fresca:

  • If you skip the filtering step, you'll retain all the fruit's fiber, which helps prevent blood sugar spikes compared to sugary juices.

  • Serve over ice, if desired. However, for an authentic Mexican agua fresca, ice the entire pitcher rather than individual glasses—or refrigerate beforehand to skip ice altogether.

  • Enjoy your refreshing, homemade agua fresca! 🍹

Ingredients

  • 4 cups drinking water

  • 2 cups chopped fresh fruit

  • 1/4 cup sugar (or substitute with pure sugar cane, agave, or another sweetener)

  • 2 teaspoons fresh-squeezed lime juice (adjust to taste)

  • Lime wedges for garnish (optional)

  • Ice (optional)
